20+ in 2024: what i bought in october
money is spooky... how does it just *disappear* like that?
What is up, freakazoids? :-)
I hope this finds you a bit chilly, bundled up with a blanket and a warm cuppa, basking in the crunchy leaf weather of fall if that is your hemisphere’s moment.
If you’re new here, “20 in 2024” is my attempt to only buy 20 non-essential items in 2024. Every month, I update on what I’ve bought (and haven’t bought) and how the project is going. Thanks for reading!
October feels like it went very quickly. I feel like some of this is attributable to how I spent my time, but also the ramp up to the United States’ 2024 Presidential election, which is happening so, so soon. Please allow me a political moment.
Caveat/soapbox moment to say: Voting is an imperfect tool, and it’s not at all the only tool we have in the making of a more just, equitable world. I also recognize many peoples’ struggle to vote for a president when no ceasefire or end to the Palestinian genocide has happened. I don’t see this (voting for a candidate who hasn’t made a ceasefire happen as VP versus not voting at all) as an all-or-nothing choice for/against genocide. Personally, my plan is to continue to put pressure on all elected officials and not to see this as a “means to an end” type of thing. I do think Tr*mp is a f*scist, and I prefer to avoid that.
If you need to check your voter registration or polling place, take 30 seconds and please do so here.
Thank you! On to the buying and not-buying of things, which is also political. (If you think buying things is not political, you’re in the wrong substack. But you’re welcome to hang here and disagree in the comments!)

Okay, so this is a little bit of a random list I feel like. Let me have some story time to provide some context:
one big unexpected cost this month :(
At the beginning of the month, my partner and I had the unfortunate experience that ended up being pretty costly.
